The working memory test in ATC selection refuses to let you specialize. One session interleaves three different span tasks: digits repeated forward, digits repeated backward, and a spatial sequence tapped back on a grid. Each strand climbs until you fail, and your profile is the ceiling you reach in each modality. This guide explains the three strands, the ceiling logic, and how to train each one without neglecting the others.

What is the Working Memory Test?

The test measures multi-modal span: how much ordered information you can hold verbally, how well you can transform it, and whether the same capacity exists for positions in space. Controllers need all three at once. A strip of callsigns is verbal storage, revising a level in your head is transformation, and the picture of who is where on the scope is pure spatial span.

Interleaving is the point. A session of 30 trials rotates through the three strands, so you never settle into one rehearsal style. The verbal strands work like the classic digit span test; the spatial strand replaces sound with position, and most candidates discover their spatial span lags their verbal one by a digit or more. Selection wants exactly that discovery: the job runs on the weaker of your channels, not the stronger.

Which Exams Include the Working Memory Test?

Multi-strand span tasks are core items in controller screening. Candidates commonly report this test type in:

  • FEAST and related ATC selection batteries, where working memory is a headline stage
  • DLR screenings, in both pilot and ATC streams
  • COMPASS and Advanced COMPASS by EPST, in memory sections
  • ADAPT, within its cognitive battery
  • Aon / cut-e batteries, in span and memory scales

Providers update their content without notice and publish no official syllabus, so treat this as candidate-reported guidance.

How the Test Works: Format and Rules

The session structure:

  • 30 trials rotate through three strands: Forward digit, Backward digit, Spatial.
  • Forward: digits flash one at a time; enter them in the same order.
  • Backward: enter the digits reversed, last seen first.
  • Spatial: squares light up on a 3x3 grid; tap them back in the order they lit.
  • Each strand lengthens after success and records your ceiling, the longest sequence you still recall reliably.

Suppose a forward trial shows 5, 2, 8: enter 5, 2, 8. The next backward trial with the same digits demands 8, 2, 5. This is exactly how it looks in the test:

Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like

You get a span figure per modality: forward, backward and spatial. Typical untrained profiles run 6 to 7 forward, 4 to 5 backward, and a spatial span near the backward figure. Assessors read the shape as much as the numbers: a balanced profile beats a spiky one, because the job cannot route around a weak channel. A backward or spatial span of 5 plus is solid; 6 plus stands out.

How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work

  1. Chunk the verbal strands. Store 5 2 8 as one spoken object, five-two-eight. Chunking transfers directly from digit span practice.
  2. Give the spatial strand a path, not points. Connect the lit squares into a shape, an L, a zigzag, a triangle. Paths survive; isolated positions evaporate.
  3. Reverse at entry, never during watching. For backward trials, store in shown order and walk it back when the pad appears.
  4. Train your weakest strand twice as often. The interleaved format punishes lopsided profiles; most candidates owe the extra reps to spatial.
  5. Practice the switching itself. Alternate strand types in training rather than blocking them; the transition is where cheap errors live.
  6. Warm up with the pure format first. A few rounds of the running memory span test primes verbal rehearsal before the multi-strand session.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rehearsing spatial positions verbally, top-left, middle, bottom-right, which overflows instantly. Use the path image instead.
  • Carrying forward-order habits into a backward trial that just started.
  • Chasing a long forward span while the backward and spatial ceilings stagnate.
  • Panicking at the first failed length; the ceiling logic expects failure, it is how the test finds your span.
