What is the Digit Span Test?
Digit span measures the capacity of your verbal working memory: how many items you can hold and reproduce without error. It complements the running memory span test, which measures how you update memory in motion; digit span asks a simpler and harsher question, how much fits at all.
The backward phase is where selection really looks. Repeating digits in order is mostly storage. Reversing them requires holding the sequence while transforming it, which is the same dual demand as flying a procedure while recomputing it. Research on working memory consistently treats backward span as the stronger predictor, and assessors weight it accordingly.

Which Exams Include the Digit Span Test?
Digit span is the closest thing aviation screening has to a universal item. Candidates commonly report forward and backward digit tasks in:
- DLR screenings, in both visual and auditory presentation
- COMPASS and Advanced COMPASS by EPST, in the memory sections
- PACE, across airline and cadet programme assessments
- ADAPT, as part of its cognitive battery

How the Test Works: Format and Rules
The session runs as two adaptive phases:
- Digits flash on screen one at a time. You watch the whole sequence; progress dots show how many remain.
- Forward phase: enter the digits in exactly the order shown.
- Backward phase: enter the digits in reverse, the last digit shown becomes the first you type.
- Every correct answer makes the next sequence one digit longer.
- Two misses in a row end the phase. Your span is the deepest length you cleared.
Suppose the screen flashes 3, then 9, then 4. In the forward phase the correct entry is 3, 9, 4. In the backward phase the same sequence demands 4, 9, 3. This is exactly how it looks in the test:

- Level 1: sequences start at 3 digits, 800 ms per digit
- Level 2: 4 digits, 700 ms per digit
- Level 3: 5 digits, 600 ms per digit

The adaptive rule means nobody finishes comfortable: the test grows until it finds your ceiling, then asks twice to make sure.

Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like
Your result is a span depth for each phase, the longest sequence you reproduced without error. Typical untrained adults land around 6 to 7 forward and 4 to 5 backward. For selection purposes, a backward span of 5 is respectable and 6 or more stands out. The gap between your two phases is informative too: a large drop from forward to backward suggests the transformation, not the storage, is what needs training.
How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work
- Chunk relentlessly. Store 3 9 4 7 2 as "394" and "72", two objects instead of five. Chunking is the single biggest span multiplier known.
- Keep a steady inner rhythm. Rehearse the sequence in the same tempo the digits arrive. Rhythm is glue for serial order.
- For backward entry, read your mental image in reverse. Do not build a reversed copy while watching; visualize the stored sequence and walk it back from the end.
- Train at the edge. Spend most practice time at your current ceiling and one digit past it. Comfortable repetitions below the ceiling change nothing.
- Short daily sessions. Ten minutes a day moves span more in three weeks than weekend marathons.
- Cross-train the pairing skill. The visual memory test trains fast encoding, which quietly raises your effective span too.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Reading digits passively instead of rehearsing them as they arrive.
- Building the reversed sequence during presentation. It costs attention exactly when the next digit lands.
