The visual memory test looks harmless on the surface: a handful of symbols, each paired with a two digit number, and some time to study them. Then the numbers vanish, the symbols return in a shuffled order, and you must produce every number from memory. What is the Visual Memory Test?
This test measures associative memory: your ability to bind two unrelated things together quickly and retrieve the pairing on demand. Aviation runs on exactly this skill. A pilot binds waypoint names to frequencies and altitudes; a controller binds callsigns to levels, headings and intentions, and refreshes those bindings every few minutes.
The abbreviation MEK comes from the German word Merkfaehigkeit, memory ability, and the format is closely modeled on the memory stage of DLR style screening. Compared with the running memory span test, which stresses how you update memory under time pressure, this test stresses how deliberately you can encode during a fixed study window. The candidates who do well are rarely the ones with a naturally big memory; they are the ones with a repeatable encoding routine.

Which Exams Include the Visual Memory Test?
Symbol and number pairing tasks in this study-then-recall format are a staple of aviation selection. Candidates commonly report meeting this test type in:
- DLR screenings (German Aerospace Center, used by Lufthansa Group and other European carriers), where the format originates
- COMPASS and Advanced COMPASS by EPST, in the memory sections
- PACE, used in several airline and cadet programme assessments
- ADAPT, part of many airline and academy screening pipelines
- Aon / cut-e batteries, which use closely related visual association tasks
Providers update their content regularly and publish no official syllabus, so treat this as candidate-reported guidance. The underlying skill transfers across all of them.
How the Test Works: Format and Rules
The session has two phases with a hard border between them:
- A set of symbol and number pairs appears on screen, for example a diamond with 27, a cross with 41, a circle with 63.
- A study timer runs. When it ends, the numbers disappear for good.
- The symbols come back one at a time, in a shuffled order.
- For each symbol you type the two digit number that belonged to it, then confirm.
- There is no going back to study. Whatever you encoded is all you have.
Suppose you studied diamond 27, cross 41, circle 63, and the first symbol shown in recall is the diamond. The correct entry is 27. This is exactly how it looks in the test:
Difficulty grows by widening the set faster than the study time:
- Level 1: 4 pairs, 20 seconds of study
- Level 2: 6 pairs, 24 seconds
- Level 3: 8 pairs, 28 seconds
- Level 4: 10 pairs, 32 seconds
- Level 5: 12 pairs, 36 seconds
Notice the trap: study time per pair shrinks from 5 seconds at Level 1 to 3 seconds at Level 5. The test is quietly asking whether your encoding gets faster, not whether your memory gets bigger.
Study time is not for staring. It is for building one small story per pair and moving on.
Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like
Each symbol answered correctly scores; there is no penalty for slow answers during recall, so the pressure lives entirely in the study phase. A strong performance is a clean sweep at the smaller set sizes and only isolated misses at 10 or 12 pairs. Assessors read a scattered pattern of errors as weak encoding, while a strong start that collapses on the last pairs simply means your routine ran out of time, which is very fixable.
How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work
- Make each pair a micro story. A diamond worth 27 might be a ring bought on the 27th. Silly is good; silly is sticky. One second of imagery beats five seconds of repetition.
- Chunk the digits. Treat 41 as one object, forty one, never as 4 and 1. You halve the load instantly.
- Budget your study time. With 8 pairs and 28 seconds, give each pair 3 seconds and spend the remainder on one fast review lap. Never linger on a stubborn pair while others go unencoded.
- Verbalize on recall. When the symbol appears, say the story back to yourself before typing. It suppresses the panic guess.
- Train above test size. Practice 12 pair sets so that 8 pairs on assessment day feels roomy.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rehearsing pairs in a loop instead of encoding them as images. Loops break the moment the order shuffles.
- Spending half the study window on the first two pairs.
- Confusing mirrored digits under pressure, 41 versus 14. Anchor the story to the full number.
- Skipping the review lap. The last three seconds of study are worth more than the first ten.
