The perceptual speed test puts you in front of nine cockpit dials and gives you a handful of seconds. A rule tells you which four dials actually matter. Then the grid disappears, and you must report the needle value of every critical dial, in reading order, from memory. It is a compressed rehearsal of instrument flying, and this guide covers the format, the scoring, and the scan technique that turns panic into procedure.
What is the Perceptual Speed Test?
The test measures structured visual intake: how quickly you can find the relevant instruments among irrelevant ones, read them precisely, and retain the readings. That chain is the core of a cockpit scan. A pilot cross-checking a panel does not read every gauge; the skill is knowing which four matter for this phase of flight and extracting their values in one pass.
Each dial in the grid has a body that is black or white, a shape that is square or round, and a needle pointing at a value from 1 to 8. The rule names one property, for example BLACK, and exactly four dials carry it. Those are your critical dials. Everything else on the grid exists only to slow you down. The memory component links this test to the visual memory test, but here the encoding must happen at scan speed.

Which Exams Include the Perceptual Speed Test?
Instrument reading tasks under time pressure appear across aviation selection. Candidates commonly report this test type in:
- DLR screenings, where instrument scan stages are a long-standing feature
- COMPASS and Advanced COMPASS by EPST, in the aviation and speed sections
- PACE, in airline and cadet programme assessments
- ADAPT, within its cognitive and aviation task set
- Aon / cut-e batteries, which use closely related perception speed items
Providers revise their batteries continuously and publish no official syllabus; read this list as candidate-reported guidance.
How the Test Works: Format and Rules
One trial runs like this:
- A rule appears: BLACK, WHITE, SQUARE or ROUND. It defines this trial's critical dials.
- A 3x3 grid of nine dials appears. Exactly four match the rule.
- A display timer runs. Use it to locate the four critical dials and read their needles, values 1 to 8.
- The grid disappears. You enter the four values in reading order: left to right, top to bottom.
- If a value is gone from memory, a No idea option keeps the positions aligned so one gap does not corrupt the rest.
Suppose the rule is BLACK and the two black dials you find first read 3 and 7. Your entry begins 3, then 7, continuing in reading order. This is exactly how it looks in the test:
Levels keep the trial count fixed and squeeze the display time:
- Level 1: 10 trials, 10 seconds of display
- Level 2: 10 trials, 8.5 seconds
- Level 3: 10 trials, 7 seconds
- Level 4: 10 trials, 5.5 seconds
- Level 5: 10 trials, 4.5 seconds
At the top level you have just over one second per critical dial, including the time spent finding them.
Read the panel like a sentence: left to right, top to bottom, and only the words that matter.
Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like
Each correctly reported value scores, position by position, so a single forgotten dial costs one point rather than the whole trial. Strong candidates keep all four values at the longer display times and still hold three of four when the window drops under six seconds. Assessors pay attention to positional discipline too: values reported in the wrong order suggest the scan pattern collapsed, which reads worse than one honest No idea.
How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work
- Scan in reading order from the start. Find the critical dials left to right, top to bottom, and read them in that same order. Encoding order and entry order must be the same order.
- Say the values as a running string. Three, seven, two, five, spoken once in rhythm, survives the grid disappearing. Four separate readings do not.
- Filter first, read second. Spend the first moment tagging the four critical dials, then do one clean reading pass. Mixing search and reading doubles the scan time.
- Train the needle geometry. With values 1 to 8 arranged around the dial, each needle angle is a value. Drill until a glance converts angle to number without counting.
- Shrink your display time gradually. Master 10 seconds before touching 7. Speed built on a stable pattern holds; speed built on scramble collapses at 4.5 seconds.
- Keep your rule discipline sharp with the concentration test; both tests punish the same lapse, attending to the wrong attribute.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Reading all nine dials. Five of them are noise by design.
- Encoding values in discovery order but entering them in reading order, or the reverse. Pick reading order for both, permanently.
- Guessing instead of using No idea. A wrong value in the wrong position can cascade; an honest gap costs exactly one point.
- Staring at one ambiguous needle while the timer eats the other three dials.
