Monitoring Test: Format, Examples and How to Prepare

The monitoring test asks a question a five year old could answer: how many dots do you see? Then it sets the dots moving, keeps them on screen for barely a moment, and repeats the question twenty times with growing crowds at growing speeds. This guide explains the format, why subitizing and grouping beat one-by-one counting, and how to train an accurate fast count instead of a lucky guess.

What is the Monitoring Test?

The test measures rapid quantity perception under motion: your ability to take in a moving scene and extract an exact count before the scene changes. The aviation parallel is direct. A controller glancing at a sector does not count aircraft one by one; the picture arrives as a quantity, four in the west, two climbing, one slow. A pilot glancing at a traffic display does the same. The skill being probed is whether your visual system delivers reliable numbers at a glance.

Cognitive science calls the effortless part subitizing: up to about four items, humans perceive the count directly, with no counting at all. Beyond that, accurate speed comes from grouping, seeing seven as a four and a three. This test is engineered to live exactly on that boundary, and the levels push you further past it. It makes a natural pair with the sustained attention test, which stresses holding focus over time rather than compressing it into a moment.

Which Exams Include the Monitoring Test?

Fast counting and quantity estimation tasks appear widely in aviation screening. Candidates commonly report this test type in:

  • DLR screenings, in the perception and monitoring stages
  • FEAST and related ATC selection batteries, where monitoring items fit the job profile directly
  • COMPASS and Advanced COMPASS by EPST, in the speed and perception sections
  • ADAPT, within its cognitive battery
  • Aon / cut-e batteries, which use closely related counting and estimation items

Providers change their content without notice and publish no official syllabus, so treat this as candidate-reported guidance.

How the Test Works: Format and Rules

Each trial is short and unforgiving:

  • A cluster of dots appears in the arena, already moving.
  • You count them while they drift; there is no freeze frame.
  • Four answer options appear with the true count among them, always neighbouring values like 4, 5, 6, 7.
  • You pick one, as fast as you can. Speed is measured alongside accuracy.
  • Each level runs 20 trials, opening easier and closing with more and faster dots.

Suppose you perceive a group of three on the left and a pair on the right. Three plus two is five: pick 5. This is exactly how it looks in the test:

The level ramp raises both crowd size and speed:

  1. Level 1: 3 to 6 dots, gentle drift
  2. Level 2: 5 to 8 dots, faster
  3. Level 3: 6 to 10 dots, faster still
  4. Level 4: 8 to 12 dots, fast
  5. Level 5: 10 to 15 dots at the highest speeds

Within every level the last trials are deliberately harder than the first, so the finish of each session is where results are made.

Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like

Both accuracy and response time count. The answer options sit one apart on purpose: an off-by-one error is the signature of a rushed group-and-add, and assessors read repeated off-by-one misses as overconfidence at speed. A strong result keeps accuracy high through the fast trials at the end of each level, even at the cost of a few tenths of a second. Consistency across all 20 trials beats a brilliant start with a sloppy finish.

How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work

  1. Group, then add. Break every cluster into chunks of four or fewer and sum them. This is the only method that survives twelve moving dots.
  2. Hold your gaze at the cluster's centre. Chasing individual dots with your eyes destroys the group picture; a soft central gaze keeps all groups in view.
  3. Trust the first number. Your initial group-and-add is measurably more accurate than a hurried recount of moving targets. Recounting is how correct answers become wrong ones.
  4. Train past test size. Practice at 15 dots so 10 feels comfortable. Overload in training is underload on assessment day.
  5. Use the options wisely. The four choices bracket the truth. If your count says five and the options start at five, the extremes are less likely than the middle values; let your grouping confidence pick between neighbours.
  6. Sharpen your instrument intake too. The perceptual speed test trains the same one-glance extraction on dials instead of dots.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Counting one by one. It fails at speed and collapses entirely under motion.
  • Following a single dot that crosses the cluster, which double-counts it.
  • Recounting after the options appear instead of answering.
  • Slowing dramatically on hard trials; the timer is part of the score, and hesitation rarely changes the number you saw.
