  • Distractor options sit close to the truth, so estimation alone cannot pick the answer.

Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like

Accuracy with response time across both families. Assessors read the split: strong arithmetic with weak chains flags a storage problem, the reverse flags raw speed. The near-miss distractors, 615 against 605, punish half-checked answers, so submitted errors read worse than slow correct ones. A strong result holds ninety percent on both families with chains answered as confidently as plain sums.

How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work

  1. Resolve eagerly, carry one number. Never store B equals A plus 3 as a formula; store 8. The chain should never contain a letter by the time you pass it.
  2. Speak the running value. Eight... six... Voicing the carried number after each line anchors it against the next transformation.
  3. Convert percentages to fraction moves. Fifteen percent is ten percent plus half of that; 25 percent is a quarter. Percentage questions are division questions in disguise.
  4. Drill fraction-of-quantity reflexes. Three quarters of 96: quarter it to 24, triple to 72. Two steps, no long arithmetic.
  5. Check magnitude before choosing. The options cluster near the truth by design; a two-second estimate rejects the far pair, and the exact computation settles the near pair.
