The divided attention test is built on an uncomfortable truth: everyone degrades when doing two things at once, and selection wants to know exactly how much you degrade. You track a drifting target, you answer quick arithmetic, and then you do both together while the test measures what each skill loses under load. What is the Divided Attention Test?
The test measures dual-task cost: the performance you sacrifice when attention splits. Aviation is a dual-task profession by definition. A pilot holds the centreline while recalculating a crosswind; a controller keeps scanning the scope while doing level arithmetic for the next clearance. Selection cares less about your best single-task score and more about how gracefully you share yourself.
The design is a clean experiment on you. First, solo baselines: sixty seconds of pure target tracking with the cursor, then sixty seconds of pure arithmetic, one question every four seconds. Then three minutes of both at once, with the target speeding up as you go. Because the test knows your baselines, it can compute precisely how much each task slipped in the dual phase. That figure is your DTCI, the divided attention cost index. Its sibling, the cross-modal attention test, splits the channels between eyes and ears instead of hand and head.

Which Exams Include the Divided Attention Test?
Dual-task designs with tracking plus arithmetic are classic selection instruments. Candidates commonly report this test type in:
- FEAST and related ATC selection batteries, in multitasking stages
- DLR screenings, where tracking-plus-math combinations are long established
- COMPASS and Advanced COMPASS by EPST, in multitasking sections
- ADAPT, within its concurrent task set
- Aon / cut-e batteries, in complex attention scales
Providers change their content without notice and publish no official syllabus, so treat this as candidate-reported guidance.
How the Test Works: Format and Rules
Five timed phases in a fixed order:
- Tracking baseline, 60 seconds: keep your cursor on a drifting orange target. A ring shows green while you are on it, red when you drift.
- Math baseline, 60 seconds: a fresh sum every 4 seconds, answered with keys 1, 2 and 3.
- Dual phase, 3 minutes: both at once while the target accelerates.
- Your on-target percentage and math accuracy from the baselines become the reference for the dual phase.
- The result is the DTCI: the percentage each task degrades under dual load.
Suppose the sum 7 + 8 appears with options 13, 15 and 17 while the target drifts left. The trained pattern: nudge the cursor first, answer 15 with key 2 a half-second later. This is exactly how it looks in the test:

Nobody escapes the cost. The test separates those who pay 10 percent from those who pay 40.
Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like
Three readings matter: tracking retention, math retention, and their balance. A strong profile keeps both tasks within roughly ten to fifteen percent of baseline. The revealing failure is asymmetry: a candidate who protects the math perfectly while the cursor lives off-target has silently dropped one job, and assessors treat that as worse than moderate loss on both. Balanced degradation is the professional answer.
How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work
- Make tracking the background task. Train until small corrective nudges happen without conscious thought; attention then stays free for the math. Automatizing one task is the entire trick.
- Answer math in the target's quiet moments. The drift has calm phases; learn to time your half-second of arithmetic inside them.
- Never stare at the sum. Read it in one glance, compute while your eyes return to the target, answer by feel on keys 1 to 3.
- Train the combination, not the parts. Solo tracking and solo math improve solo scores; only dual practice moves the DTCI.
- Push baselines up anyway. A higher tracking baseline gives you margin to spend in the dual phase. The mental arithmetic test keeps the math half effortless.
- Review your asymmetry after each session. If one task keeps winning, consciously bias effort the other way next run.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Parking the cursor and batch-answering math, then scrambling back. The tracking log shows every second of it.
- Skipping math to protect a pretty tracking score; unanswered questions count against you.
- Gripping the mouse harder as speed rises. Tension degrades fine control exactly when you need it.
- Treating the baselines casually; a lazy baseline flatters your DTCI in practice and lies to you about progress.
