The coordinate system test puts a radar-style grid in front of you and asks the questions a controller answers all shift long: how far, which direction, and what happens after the turn. Waypoints sit on the grid as triangles, aircraft as numbered circles, and the clock gives you seconds rather than minutes. This guide explains the three question types, the compass conventions, and the mental geometry that makes exact answers fast.

What is the Coordinate System Test?

The test measures applied spatial-numerical reasoning: converting positions on a grid into distances, bearings and rotations without tools. This is not abstract math dressed up in aviation clothes; it is the actual currency of radar work. A controller estimates miles between blips constantly, and a pilot translating "heading 090, then thirty degrees right at the waypoint" is running the same computation this test scores.

Three question families cover the ground. Distance questions ask how far one point is from another, with one grid cell equal to one nautical mile. Heading questions ask the compass direction from A to B, where north is 000, east 090, south 180, west 270 and the diagonals fall on 045, 135, 225 and 315. Compound questions chain them: fly a heading to a waypoint, then rotate right by some amount, and report the result. Which Exams Include the Coordinate System Test?

Grid, distance and heading tasks are a staple wherever aviation screening leans practical. Candidates commonly report this test type in:

  • DLR screenings, in the applied aviation sections
  • FEAST and related ATC selection batteries, where coordinate and heading work maps directly onto the job
  • COMPASS and Advanced COMPASS by EPST, in the aviation knowledge and spatial sections
  • PACE, in airline and cadet programme assessments
  • ADAPT, within its applied cognitive tasks

Providers update their content without notice and publish no official syllabus, so treat this as candidate-reported guidance.

The rules across all three question families:

  • The grid shows named waypoints as triangles and numbered aircraft as circles. North is up, east is right.
  • Distance questions: count cells along the straight line; one cell is one nautical mile.
  • Heading questions: report the compass bearing from the first point to the second, using the eight main directions.
  • Compound questions: take the given heading to a waypoint, apply the stated right turn, and answer the resulting heading or the leg that follows.
  • Four options per question, one correct, and a hard per-question timer.

A worked example. An aircraft sits three cells east and four cells north of a waypoint. The 3-4-5 triangle gives the distance instantly: 5 NM. This is exactly how it looks in the test:

Levels shift the mix toward compound questions while the clock tightens:

  1. Level 1: 10 questions, mostly distance and heading, 12 seconds each and 18 for compound
  2. Level 2: more compound at 11 and 16 seconds
  3. Level 3: an even three-way mix at 10 and 15 seconds
  4. Level 4: compound-heavy at 9 and 13 seconds
  5. Level 5: over half compound at 8 and 12 seconds
Turns are always given as right turns. A left turn is just a big right turn wearing a disguise.

Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like

Accuracy per question with response time recorded. The distractor options are built from the classic slips: a bearing read backwards, a rotation applied leftward, an off-by-one cell count. Assessors therefore read your error types. Mixing up reciprocal headings, answering 270 where 090 was correct, is the red flag; running out of time on compound questions is merely a speed issue. Strong candidates hold ninety percent across all three families with clean compound work at the 12 second limit.

How to Prepare: Strategies That Actually Work

  1. Burn the compass rose into memory. The eight directions and their numbers must be instant: N 000, NE 045, E 090, SE 135, S 180, SW 225, W 270, NW 315. Every heading answer starts here.
  2. Count cells as legs, not diagonals. Read east-west cells, then north-south cells. Pure legs give the distance directly; mixed legs flag the Pythagorean pairs, and 3-4-5 plus 6-8-10 cover most grids.
  3. Do rotations on a clock face. Ninety right from 090 is 180; add, and wrap past 360 by subtracting it. Verbalize the arithmetic; silent turning is where reciprocal errors breed.
  4. Answer heading questions from the start point. Put your eye on A, look toward B, and only then read the rose. Bearings read backwards are the single most common slip in this format.
  5. Rehearse compound questions as two clean steps. Leg one, spoken; rotation, spoken; result. Never as one blurred motion.
  6. Keep your arithmetic warm. The mental arithmetic test trains the fast, verbal number work that compound headings quietly depend on.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reading the bearing from the destination instead of the origin.
  • Applying a rotation to the wrong reference, turning from north instead of from the current heading.
  • Counting the starting cell as one instead of zero.
  • Leaving compound questions for last-second panic; they carry the most weight at higher levels.
