What is the Instrument Comprehension Test?

On the attitude indicator, the aircraft symbol is fixed and the horizon moves: a climb pushes the horizon down behind the symbol, a dive raises it, and in a right bank the horizon's right end drops. On the silhouettes, you observe from the south looking north: an aircraft heading north shows you its tail, one heading south comes at you nose-on. The silhouettes carry deliberate cues, an orange nose cone and the red-left, green-right wingtip lights, so bank direction and facing are readable at a glance. Every wrong option differs from the answer in exactly one attribute, which is why sloppy reading of a single dial is enough to fail a question.

  • Two dials define the attitude: the artificial horizon (bank angle and pitch class) and the compass (heading).
  • Four silhouettes are offered; each wrong option differs in exactly one thing: bank direction, bank amount, pitch or heading.
  • Levels 1 and 2 use four headings and gentle banks with generous per-question timers (25 and 20 seconds); level 3 moves to eight headings at 15 seconds.
  • Levels 4 and 5 switch to a single block clock, 20 questions in 6 minutes, then 20 in 4.5 minutes with sixteen headings, and unreached questions count as wrong.

Scoring: What a Good Result Looks Like

Accuracy over all questions, with a pass mark of 70. The result screen splits your errors by type, bank direction, bank amount, pitch and heading, and that split is the diagnosis: a bank-direction cluster means the moving-horizon convention has not settled; a heading cluster means the south-looking-north viewpoint is still translating slowly. Strong candidates keep a fixed reading order and finish block levels with no unanswered questions.

  3. Use the wingtip lights. Red left, green right: in any banked silhouette, the low wingtip's colour confirms bank direction instantly.
